In 2006, Doug launched the Sovern Nation blog to comment on national and California politics. It became a centerpiece of his reporting on the historic 2008 presidential election, which won a National Headliner Award for the nation’s best radio coverage of the campaign. The blog itself also won several awards. The blog continued through the 2010 California gubernatorial race, when it garnered international notoriety and mention on the front page of the New York Times, for Doug’s account of his encounter with candidate Jerry Brown on a jogging trail in the Oakland hills. After 2010, Doug’s extracurricular writing time was consumed by his Twitter novel, and later, his short story writing, so the blog appears only occasionally now, often during the peak of an election season.
